Hi everyone,
I've been getting quite a few questions about the group classes and master classes with Kathleen, so rather than writing back to everyone separately, I thought it would be easier to write everyone...
The schedule for Kathleen's visit was sketched out by Rob while he was here (he was able to do it so easily because he has a lot of experience in running institutes and workshops). He suggested the music to be worked on in the ensemble class as there is something for everyone in it, and it is a fantastic piece that can be used in performances with other instrumentation.
Master classes: for students in books 1 and up. Kathleen will spend 15 min. / student in one-hour lessons for those in books 1-3, and 20 min. / student for those in books 4 and up. All students/parents stay for the hour and learn from each student. The schedule shows the times that have been allocated for students at each book level. My goal is to fill each time slot with students at each book level as indicated on the schedule. This puts students at a similar level in each master class so there is the opportunity for the most learning all round. First come, first serve as there is only time for this number of master classes. The time slot allocated to students not taking lessons with Katie or Bryn is for SSAY members, but Bryn and Katie are not available on the Saturday so cannot watch their students' lessons. I may adjust the schedule for master classes if there are not enough students at a particular book level, giving an opportunity for others to participate. I will send around a confirmed schedule once the times have been filled.
Katie has listed what pieces her students should play for their master class. This is a polished piece that gives the teacher a good idea of technique points to work on. Bryn will discuss this with her students. Anyone not playing a Suzuki piece should let me know so I can let Kathleen know what to expect.
Group classes: Kathleen is teaching the group classes each day she is here for all students in their respective book level groups.
Ensemble classes: led by Kathleen, and for all those students who have been participating in ensemble this year (with Katie, Bryn, Rob). Bryn has assigned students their parts and asked that everyone be prepared to play their parts. If you are not going to attend the ensemble classes, Bryn (and I) need to know as the parts have been assigned and because of cost calculation.
So, I need to know from you:
1) do you want a master class (all those in book 1 and up)? Will you be playing at non-Suzuki piece, and if so, what?
2) will you be participating in the group classes each day? This will allow us to determine the costs for everyone (covering Kathleen's cost and space rental).
3) if you will NOT be in the ensemble.
Thanks a lot!
Jody

Happy New Year!
Please find attached the upcoming schedule for Kathleen Spring. She will be in Whitehorse from Friday January 17 -Sunday January 19teaching group and master classes and offering parent talks. Due to her limited time, her schedule starts at 11:30am on Fridaymorning.
As mentioned, there will be a group class each day for the various levels. Having a group class with Kathleen for three consecutive days will allow both Kathleen to maximize sharing her teaching techniques with parents and observing teachers and allow the students and parents to observe the progress that can be made in an intensive setting. PLEASE CONFIRM GROUP ATTENDANCE WITH JODY COX ([email protected]). The more students that attend, the lower the costs will be for everyone.
MASTER CLASS SPACE IS LIMITED AND WILL BE OFFERED ON A FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVED BASIS. Please contact Jody Cox to reserve a place ([email protected]) and state the piece to be played. (Please see below for an explanation of what a master class is.)
Master Classes will be offered to students in book 1 and up. For students in Book 1-3: each class will be one hour and each student will receive 15 minutes of one on one training (please see the schedule for the times of the Book 1 Master Class, Book 2 Master Class and Book 3 Master Class). The cost for each Book 1-3 student is $25.
There are 2 different one hour Master Class slots for students in books 4+. Each student will get 20 minutes of instruction. Please specify the time that you would prefer. The cost for each Book 4+ student is $33.
For students of Katie, she has recommended a piece for each of her students to prepare for the Master Class (see below). These pieces may be changed but please email Katie to confirm your alternate choice.
What is a Master Class? A master class is a concentrated public coaching. Because each turn is much shorter than an actual lesson and because the master (i.e. teacher) usually explains everything to the rest of the group, they'll focus on only one or two very specific aspects of each performance. That way, everyone learns: the violin student receives a valuable nugget of information that they can later apply to the rest of their repertoire, and the rest of the students experiences how the teacher's advice improved the other student's performance (and, in turn, can use this new knowledge in their own playing).
Thank you and please remember to contact Jody to confirm your group class attendance and to register for a master class.

From January 17-19, SSAY is bringing up Kathleen Spring, who teaches Suzuki Violin Pedagogy at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music and maintains an active studio in the Denver metro area. She is a specialist in parent education. In order to prepare for her visit, a condensed version of group classes will be held for the next two mondays. The schedule and list of pieces to be prepared is listed below.
Kathleen’s schedule will be finalized this weekend. However, during her stay there will be multiple group and master classes from Friday, Jan. 17 at 11:30 am through Sunday, Jan 19, 7pm. There will also be specialized parent lectures.
We have booked a group class each day of Kathleen's visit for the various levels. Having a group class with Kathleen for three consecutive days will allow both Kathleen to maximize sharing her teaching techniques with parents and observing teachers and allow the students and parents to observe the progress that can be made in an intensive setting.
As mentioned, in preparation for Kathleen’s visit, SSAY will start a condensed version of group classes 2 weeks early (that will focus on pre-selected repertoire). The aim of these classes is to prep the pieces that will be reviewed with Kathleen. Bryn will be instructing them. The dates and revised times are as follows. There will be NO Pre-Twinkle on Jan 6 and 13, due to the late start time of the classes.
Please note: Book 2+ is for everyone in book 2+ for these few weeks (including Kathleen Spring), not just Book 2-4. So the students in Ensemble would come for 6:00-7:00.
Please prepare the pieces listed below.

Group schedule resumes as normal. There will be no group play-in as listed on the calendar. Katie and Bryn will use the regular group schedule to continue the work of Kathleen Spring.
Monday, January 27 (Riverdale Baptist)
GROUP CANCELLED. We will give everyone a bit of a breather after the early start and the intensive Jan 17-19weekend with Kathleen Spring.
Group costs and Kathleen Spring workshop costs are still being calculated but the Board will keep them as low as possible.
Thank you for your understanding with these schedule changes.
